# Why build a directory business?

> The business case for niche directories — low overhead, recurring revenue, and compounding SEO.

A niche directory is one of the most underrated internet businesses. It requires no inventory, no fulfillment, no proprietary technology — and when done right, it generates recurring revenue from a growing, self-maintaining asset.

## The model in plain language

You build a searchable catalog of professionals or businesses in a specific niche. Visitors use it to find someone to hire. Professionals pay you a monthly fee to have a prominent, complete listing that brings them contacts.

That's it. No ads to manage, no products to ship, no customer support complexity.

## Why it works financially

**Recurring revenue.** Listing subscriptions are monthly or annual. A professional who has been getting contacts from your directory for 6 months will not cancel — they don't want to lose the visibility they've built.

**Low churn if you deliver value.** Churn is high when listings don't generate contacts. Churn is low when they do. Your job is to drive enough traffic that listings deliver value — and SEO does that for you over time, largely on autopilot.

**Each listing is a compounding SEO asset.** Every new profile page you add is another indexed page targeting "\[profession] \[city]" keywords. A directory with 500 profiles has 500 pages working for it in Google. That traffic compounds over time without additional spend.

**Minimal ongoing cost.** Once the catalog is running, your main costs are the Supadir subscription, a domain, and your time. You don't pay for traffic (it's organic) and you don't have product development costs (Supadir handles the platform).

## The numbers

Let's look at a realistic example:

| Scenario | Details |
| --------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------- |
| Niche | Physiotherapists in Poland |
| Total addressable market | \~15,000 licensed physiotherapists |
| Realistic listing penetration (2 years) | 5% = \~750 listings |
| Average paid plan | \$19/month |
| Paid conversion rate | 40% = 300 paying listings |
| Gross monthly revenue | \$5,700/month |
| Supadir platform cost | \$149/month (Professional) |
| Net before payment fees | \~\$5,500/month |

This is a one-person business generating over \$60,000/year once at scale — from a single niche, in a single country. Multiple niches or geographic expansions multiply this.

## Why now?

Most professional niches still don't have a good dedicated directory. Google is where people search, but Google is generic — it can't tell you which physiotherapist accepts your insurance, does home visits, and specializes in post-ACL rehab. A well-structured directory can.

The tools to build this used to require a developer, months of work, and significant upfront cost. Supadir collapses that to an afternoon and \$49/month.

The window for being the go-to directory in your niche is still open. In most cities and professions, the right directory hasn't been built yet.

## What it takes to succeed

A directory business isn't passive from day one. The first 3–6 months require active work:

* **Outreach** to get the first 50–100 listings
* **Content work** to get the SEO foundation right
* **Relationship building** with associations and communities in your niche

After that inflection point, growth becomes more organic and the business becomes genuinely low-maintenance.
